The name

Okaeri is what you say to someone coming home

In Japan, おかえり is what you say when you hear the front door go. It isn't quite a hello; it's closer to I'm glad you're back.

We took the name because that is what we wanted people to feel walking in, the first time as much as the tenth.

The kitchen

The broth takes ten hours

It goes on low in the morning and nobody touches it until it's ready. That's the base for the nine ramen on the menu, and for each one you pick how strong you want the broth, mild, medium or strong, and whether you want it spicy.

Around that there are gyoza, bao, tempura, karaage and takoyaki to pick at, curry rice bowls and Japanese desserts.

The place

Inside there are lanterns, neon and a lot of manga on the walls

The restaurant sits in a stone building in the old town and inside it looks nothing like it. Red lanterns hanging from the ceiling, an OKAERI neon at the back, corrugated metal, and walls covered in manga. There's a cabinet full of figures that everyone stops to look at.

The bar does cocktails, bubble tea and Japanese and Korean drinks.
